¡Jazz Ruso!

Independent Researchers Society – Summer Time

213m0k9.jpgThe Independent Researcher Society is a project headed by Russian jazz pianist and composer Natalia Skvortsova with the purpose of showcasing some of the best jazz musicians Moscow has to offer. Summer Time features Skvortsova on piano with Dmitri Mospan on tenor saxophone, Anton Konchakov on clarinet and bass clarinet, Pavel Protasov on bass, and Peter Talalai on drums.

This is mainstream jazz in the post bop style of the 60s. Skvortsova, in particular, reminds me of early Herbie Hancock or McCoy Tyner while Mospan’s tenor work in highly influenced by Coltrane. Konchakov is quite a clarinetist but really shines on bass clarinet . His soaring solo on “Train” is especially notable. Prostasov and Talalai lays a firm and swinging foundation. My favorite track is the jazz waltz, “Baby Sleeping” with its lilting melody and mid-tempo cheerfulness that is aptly exploited in Konchakov’s exceptional solo. This is an excellent album clearly illustrating that jazz has become an international language.

The album is available as an album zip or separate tracks in 320kbps MP3
